London lads the Tricks are
revving up for a new double-A side single and there is a real sense of purpose
and urgency here so let's not hand around. The first of the two A-sides, 'On
Trial', is a bone-rattling, breathless piece of rock'n'roll that sounds like
the National having a go at a punk track. The guitars sound lush in a way that
Interpol mastered for so long, the drums pound like a proper indie romper and
the vocals have a real desperation and passion coursing through every word.
'Gilgamesh' is just as urgent and confident in sound but it has a more slick,
American feel as the vocals purr and the bass line selectively pops up like the
revving engine on a sweet ass sports car. Interestingly, these guys cite Arcade
Fire and the Strokes as influences and I can hear both of those in there but
there is that all important element that is pure The Tricks and that's what
makes this particularly exciting.
