JINNWOO - EP REVIEW

Jinnwoo - Your Baby EP
Jinnwoo - Your Baby EP

Release Date: 16th June 2014

Brighton based Jinnwoo impressed me no end with his last single so this new EP is a welcome arrival in my inbox. Opening up with 'Your Baby' and instantly we're transported to a dark and bleak place in the man's soul that exists in the shadows and feeds off frustration and despair in equal measure. 'You Should Be Feeling This Elliott' is a delicately beautiful song that has country elements submerged beneath a huge swathe of indie expansiveness that sees Jinnwoo blend his vocals with those of the supremely talented Kyla La Grange with great results.

On 'Sorrysong', Jinnwoo takes things down to a darker place (if that's possible) to create a song that sounds like trapist monks creating demos of Depeche Mode songs with nothing but a microphone, a broken piano and a draft. 'Solo Man (feat. Alasdair Roberts)' is a twisted, tortured piece of acoustic madness featuring some disharmonious vocals harmonies that give this a dark, occultish feel. And this is where Jinnwoo excels, in creating an atmosphere and sensation that things aren't all as well you might have hoped. Essentially, this is the musical equivalent of the gut wrenching feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when something truly horrible has happened and it might be your fault. Music should always evoke emotion and boy does Jinnwoo tick that box.
