ADAM SWEET - ALBUM REVIEW

Adam Sweet - Mortuary Blues

Release Date: Out Now

'Mortuary Blues' is the third studio album from Devon bluesman Adam Sweet and the gnarly guitar playing at the start of opening track 'The Mortuary Blues' tells you everything you need to know about what is to come. The vibe continues on 'Full Moon Fight' with gun shot drums slathered in rich organ chords and the kind of guitar playing that makes you want to head for the nearest swamp. On 'Did It For The Money' Sweet takes a slightly mellower approach to the blues with some deft guitar notes interplaying with the keys before 'Backstop' brings us some introspective country vibes that will bring a tear to the driest eye in the house.

Now, 'Eatin's Cheatin'' is a well known drinking catchphrase around my way so this may become a new theme song for the hardened soaks down at my local as the instrumental track brings funky guitar, rasping organ and a little harmonica to the party. We head for the slow dance on 'Ashes and Ice', a seven minute track that builds slowly to a rip-snorter of a guitar solo. There's a Bryan Adams vibe to 'Fortune Ain't Free' but with better guitar playing while 'White Lies' sees Plymouth's Alex Hart join in on vocal duties for a low light blues-country jam that is more than a little easy on the ears.

As we approach the end, Sweet has a couple more Aces up his sleeve starting with 'Loyalty And Lies', a chugging and grooving song that could surely only be played with a severe case of guitarist stank-face. Sweet closes out with 'No Way Of Knowing', channelling Van Morrison with a gravelly vocal performance and a sense of world weariness bidding us good night as we leave. Adam Sweet is a great bluesman who lets the music do the talking and, fun fact, recorded this whole album in a converted Victorian Mortuary that he bought - hence the title. Just in time for Halloween then....
