Tucked away on a cliff top in a forgotten corner of Cornwall there is a set of buildings that look half abandoned and half unloved. Within those buildings sits the Garrison bar (featuring the best cocktails this side of London), the smallest nightclub in Cornwall (tbc) and Patchwork Studios. You would miss all the fun if you didn't take time to explore but judging by the sold out crowd tonight, the word is well and truly out on this haven of creativity
And creativity was the watchword as opening band the Phantom Division took the stage looking like a rag-tag bunch of characters who had time travelled from the 80s and brought their visuals with them. Imagine the Sister of Mercy with Patrick Bateman on vocals and Chewbacca on electric sax and you're halfway into this band's insane world. They needed a bigger stage to own and a darker room to control but this is a band with a truly unique sound, a striking image, nostalgia drenched visuals and the potential do some very exciting things. Or start a cult.
The main event tonight was the triumphant return of Badcore Horns people had come out en masse to witness the neon clad trio along with MC Vegas. From the get-go this was a high energy experience designed to get the crowd jumping along to the improbably infectious sounds of a sax, trumpet and drums triumvirate. Tracks like 'Oculus Riff' got the party started while the politically charged 'President Evil' got the crowd chanting in support of Palestine. 'Rage Quit' appealed to the gamers out there but the surprise treat was the cover of viral track 'The Spark' that was created by the kids of Cork's Kabin Crew - it's an undeniable banger and made even more epic thanks to that beefy ol' sax. From this point on I kinda got lost in the music and the joy of seeing a band I've been wanting to catch live for a very long time. The perfect night to herald that start of spring and associated shenanigans.
