RHYS HURD - EP REVIEW

Rhys Hurd - Teach Me How To Love EP

Release Date: Out Now

This EP from Cornish based solo artist Rhys Hurd came out at the tail end of 2025 and somehow passed me by but I suspect it's because it is seven (7) tracks long and may have been misfiled in the mini album section of the world. Anyhoo, 'Teach Me How To Love' eases us in with 'Too Much To Ask' which floats on a dreamy, 80s melody that is somewhere between the Twin Peaks soundtrack and Ultravox before the title track gives a more recognisable Hurd vibe with rock'n'roll guitars and indie-punk vocals on a song that is both slickly produced and rough around the edges.

The stylish strut of 'Do You Miss Me' is another reminder of the chops that Hurd has on guitar while 'Set Me Free' has a Beach Boys meets Redd Kross vibe with surfy pop melodies and jangly guitars. 'Do It My Way' returns to those 80s synth vibes and a pleasing raised-heartbeat of a beat before the snarling guitars join in bringing this one into an early 90s space where styles and sounds are overlapping. Penultimate track 'Dancing in Mangos' is a vocals and guitar jam for the wee small hours and the EP closes out on 'Someone Better', another rock'n'roll romp bursting with energy and enthusiasm.
