MADISON BEER - ALBUM REVIEW

Madison Beer - Locket (RCA)

Release Date: Out Now

I've been a long time supporter of Madison Beer and I'm not really sure how or why she's not hitting the heights of Sabrina Carpenter et al yet but still she produces top quality pop with heart, soul and edge so let's hope 2026 is her big year. 'Locket' opens with the semi title track 'Locket Theme', a dreamy little intro that lulls you into a false sense of security before former single 'Yes Baby' goes all Princess Superstar meets Eric Prydz on us with frantic electro rhythms and breathless vocals - just due to the gym workout, right? 'Angel Wings' allows us to catch our breath a little with a chilled R'n'B inspired track while 'For The Night' is a delicate and soulful number with an acoustic melody that gives this a French pop aesthetic.

Latest single 'Bad Enough' (check the video out, seriously wicked in every sense of the word) is initially a delicate icicle of a pop song but the chorus finds some energy and power in Beer's impressive vocal range that elevates the melody. The deftness of touch on 'Happy Habit' belies the pain behind the lyrics that tackle making repeated poor life decisions but the mood shifts on 'You're Still Everything' which is all about heartache, loss, and the distance in between you and the one you love.

This is, for sure, a breakup album but taken from a number of different angles, highlighted perfectly by the lyrics of 'Complexity' that include the line "I have a way, a tendency, I tend to stay with people who leave" set to a melody that is bordering on trance but with a chilled drum'n'bass beat. The electro vibe to the vocals on 'Make You Mine' crackle with the pure rush of make up sex or sex with an ex before the album finishes off with the pop bombast of 'Nothing At All' which builds and builds until a skittish beat comes in and the confusion of falling in and out of love and lust is encapsulated brilliantly. It's a shame that hearts have to be broken but when the result is music like this then it seems worth the sacrifice.
