Debdepan - Lovers & Others EP (Silent Kid Records)
Release Date: Out Now
This EP has been been waiting furtively in my inbox for a little while now and I could ignore it no longer. Debdepan are a moody looking duo from Margate (not a common start to a sentence) and their 'Lovers & Others' EP is five tracks of intense but darkly delicious music. Opening with 'The Girl', Debdepan rumble into view on the back of thrumming guitars and dead-eyed vocals with a grunge intensity underpinned by Trent Reznor-esque song crafting. 'Oh No' is a mellower affair but it still has a bubbling dark heart like boiling oil stirred up by the searingly razor sharp guitars.
The mid-point of the EP, 'Habit', has a swaggering riff to it that sounds like Franz Ferdinand's illegitimate off-spring having a party on the hush-money Kapranos and co have sent them. The pulsating rhythm of 'Blue' has an almost folky or medieval vibe to it but as it layers up with a disco beat and darkly throbbing bass you can feel the song evolving before your ears. The EP closes out on 'Ghost', an interesting blend of LadyHawke's 80s influences and the Gossip's direct attitude creating a banger of a closing tune. Such an exciting band with the potential to straddle the world if the wind catches them right.
