Madisine - The Storm Is Over
Release Date: Out Now
This debut album release from Italian artist Madisine is the culmination of a year that has seen him release a string of superb singles and announce his arrival on the international scene. 'The Storm Is Over' is 11 tracks of grunge fuelled fun that gets going with 'YOU', a song that lazily announces its arrival with slacker energy but a heart full of love and a Jeff Buckley drawl. The confident stomp of 'Drain Love' is a modern indie-rock anthem with Hives-esque guitars while 'Slow Down' is the kind of dreamy slow burner that Radiohead or Headswim used to trade in.
The 90s influence continues on the meandering amble of 'Can You Feel?' with its clicking beat and swaying guitars before recent single 'Full Frontal Cardio Dance' dances its dark dance with thrashing guitars and easy charm. The slow build of 'Way Back' is used to devastating effect to overwhelm the emotions but 'X_X' is a more direct garage rock number that shows how versatile this young and talented artist is. The introspective shuffle of 'Myself' sounds like a lost Thom Yorke demo but 'Where Are You Now?' is more like Iggy Pop guesting on early Nirvana sessions and if that's a sentence that doesn't get you excited then I'm not sure we can hang out anymore.
On the penultimate song, 'Between Fairies And Dogs', Madisine breaks out an acoustic guitar for something altogether more folky than the rest of the album, settling into a radio-friendly format with plenty of heart and pathos. The album closes out on title track 'The Storm Is Over', a six minute plus epic with Buckley influences that crescendo in a maelstrom of guitars, cymbals and impassioned vocals to sign off in the only fitting way for this collection. If Madisine had emerged within the UK, US or even Canadian music scenes I think he would be mobbed by labels but the fact that he comes from Italy makes him a more intriguing listen and we should all be grateful for that.
