Basement Jaxx + Craig Charles + Storm

A sunny evening in the grounds of a Devon castle might not necessarily be where you might expect to find a hectic night out but, as we approached the gates and heard Storm Mollison warming up the crowd up with some deliciously summery beats, we knew we were in the right place. Following some, frankly, banging Katsu Noodles we settled in and got down to the funky sounds of Craig Charles, his funk and soul show delivering as it always does - his funked version of the Beatles' 'Come Together' was a real highlight, especially after the sad news of the passing of Diogo Jota.
The main event of the evening was the return of Basement Jaxx to the live arena and boy oh boy were they ready to make a comeback. With an alien themed stage set up, a particularly unique DJ booth (aka a hole in the middle of the stage) and some live performers that brought a real energy to proceedings - everybody knew that this was going to be a big night. From 'Good Luck' and 'Oh My Gosh' to 'Red Alert' and 'Rendezvous', the boys from Brixton pumped out banger after banger and the crowd were in raptures. Not content with a back catalogue of classic dance tunes, the pair invited an assortment of vocalists to join in and some impressively flexible dancers to really add to the carnival atmosphere.
The climax of the night was an absolutely hectic, chaotic and joyous rendition of 'Where's Your Head At?' which had every performer out on stage as well as bunch folks in gorilla suits. There was a short encore of 'Express Yourself' and forthcoming new single 'Bambino' before the massed revellers headed off into the Devon evening full of music, joy and a sense that for a few hours we had escaped the world. That's what music can do in the right hands and Basement Jaxx have some of the best hands around. Fact.
