J.LYNCH - EP REVIEW

J.Lynch - Small Songs For Hawks EP (Krautpop!
Records)

Release Date: Out Now

So J.Lynch is the solo project of Johnny Lamb of Thirty Pounds Of Bone and 'Small Songs For Hawks' is his new EP. All caught up? Good. We get going with 'Lungcutters' (great band name if anyone wants one) which blends slacker-grunge guitars with Mersey Beat melodic sensibilities and, honestly, it's like eating pizza for the first time when you think you've already tried all the foods. On 'Worst Best Friend' there's glorious wall of noise made from guitars, drums and electronic bloops which all combine to make a sound that is both weighty and liberating - like Mogwai performing Beach Boys songs.

The six string chug of 'Jenny's Friends' soon explodes into a Rooney meets Redd Kross-esque anthem with subdued vocals before 'Made Up' takes us on a more blissed out trip that sounds like it was recorded during a jam session with Dr Who on the TARDIS (Peter Capaldi era, I reckon). The collection closes with 'Being Mechanically' and there's a real Super Furry Animals vibe which I hadn't realised I missed having in my life so much. There is an awful lot going on in this musical soup but you'd be mad not to dip your bread in and having a taste.
