GRETE - EP REVIEW

Grete - Cry In Colour EP

Release Date: 23rd May 2025

Anyone for some Lithuanian Jazz inspired R'n'B covered in a pop gloss? I thought so. 'Cry In Colour' is the second EP from singer-songwriter Grete and it genuinely feels different to anything else I've heard this year which is always a good thing. Opening track 'Skinny Bones' starts like a hazy 70s daydream before fast-forwarding to the 90s only for Grete to lay down a vocal that equal parts pop, soul, funk and R'n'B. On 'Juice' the vibe is more slow-jam with some stuttered, almost rapped vocals that remind me of TLC or early Janet Jackson singing with De La Soul doing their less-is-more thing with the instrumentation.

I haven't heard a song as soulful, honest and delicate as 'See U More' since I first discovered Jones and that is a huge compliment but the piano and vocal combo is both arresting and affecting so it's hard not to be impressed by this one. The EP finishes on 'Different' which is a darker, more sombre number but still one that thrives on the vibe that Grete creates and soon it evolves into the kind of track that you want to listen to while cruising the city streets in the early hours. A stunning collection of songs that show an artist exploring different styles but still weaving them all together under her own brand.
