GRACE ELIZABETH HARVEY - EP REVIEW

Grace Elizabeth Harvey - Other Faith EP

Release Date: Out Now

Grace Elizabeth Harvey is a songwriter and cellist. And Time traveller. Or not. What I'm trying to say in a roundabout way is that this debut EP, 'Other Faith', has a timeless quality to it and I quite like the idea that someone would master time travel and use that power to just float around singing gorgeous folk songs and playing the cello. The EP opens (whenever you're listening to it) with 'Lullaby For Wasted Time', an effortlessly calm and beautiful song that has Laura Marling's deftness of touch and sense that time is an endless commodity. 'Birdsong' is similarly lackadaisical as it luxuriates in Harvey's soft, heart-warming vocal tones and the guitar notes ripple off downstream, leaning into the direction of the riverbanks.

By this point, the birdsong outside my window and the warm summer breeze have combined with the music to transport me to another place altogether and who am I to resist such forces? There's more than a hint of Joni Mitchell to the introspective 'Grace' while 'Goodnight' is a darker, more unsettling number that shows of Harvey's impressive vocal range. The EP closes on 'Belief' which returns to the folky roots of this EP and you can almost hear the clip-clop of a horse as you imagine this one being strummed from the back of a carriage rolling through the English countryside. I'm always slightly relieved to hear new artists writing and recording folk music because I feel like it is one of the last true and uncommodified genres of music. That relief becomes delight when the artists are as good as Grace Elizabeth Harvey.
