In a real snub to guitarists, Falmouth outfit Shoes Off have gone for a line-up of Drums, Bass, Vocals and more Vocals but it bloody works. On new single 'Violent Flowers', the rhythm section provides a slinky, almost sinister mood that falls somewhere between a Muse live jam, Frank Zappa and skeezy New Orleans dive bar in the wee small hours. Then come the twin vocals of Aisha Lord and Caitlyn Murray who take turns on the mic before doubling up to brilliant effect with a sound that veers between double-tracking and harmonising. I am very, very excited about the sound of this band and what they can achieve with a set-up that frees the vocals up to take a more melodic role and elevates the bass beyond a bit-part instrument.
