ROLLA - EP REVIEW

Rolla - We Owe You Nothing EP

Release Date: Out Now

Now, it’s going to be easy to compare this Manchester five piece to Oasis and it would be justifiable given their style, sound and geography but Rolla will get that comparison throughout their career and I think there’s more here. Sure, opening track ‘We Owe You Nothing’ is a big, stomping indie anthem with a wall of guitars and more swagger than a Brazilian football team but aside from the Gallaghers there are nods to Kasabian, the Stone Roses and the Seahorses in there. Similarly, ‘It Ain’t Easy’ has a confidence and ambition that puts them alongside contemporaries like the Assist or Louis Dunford as they take on some social commentary in between the feedback, sneering vocals and unexpectedly funky bass.

‘Beautiful Lie’ sounds like it’s going to be the obligatory acoustic ballad but it soon develops into a sing-along stomper straight from the Noel Gallagher songbook – there’s no getting away from that one. The final track of this collection is ‘The Slide’ which is a real set closer of a song that swirls, spirals and generally absorbs everything it comes in to contact with thanks to some great production and ‘Be Here Now’ vibes. It is great to have bands like Rolla around at a time when both bands and confidence are on the decline so give me a pint of lager, take me down the front and let’s escape through rock’n’roll for a few hours, shall we?
