FAKE DAD - EP REVIEW

Fake Dad - Holly Wholesome and the Slut
Machine EP

Release Date: 14th March 2025

Storming in with a strong contender for EP title of the year comes LA/NYC duo Fake Dad with 'Holly Wholesome and the Slut Machine'. Now you're paying attention, aren't ya? This seven track collection kicks off with 'Crybaby' complete with sassy but laid back guitars, bubbling bass and vocals that fit somewhere between Beach House and the B52s. 'Odyssey to Venice' continues the super-cool vibes that perfectly straddle that West Coast to East transition - like the Strokes hanging out on the beach and jamming with looser neck ties. On 'WANTO' we're treated to a perky and free-spirited road-trip of an anthem before 'So Simple!' buzzes into life like a grunge-pop seductress with hints of the Fall and Charly Bliss mingling together with thrilling results.

Alice Ivy joins the duo on 'Little Fake' which has a slower, more purposeful rhythm but still features the trademark luxurious sparseness and a riot girl explosion of a chorus. Penultimate track 'ON/OFF' chugs and broods like Smashing Pumpkins mixed with the dead-eyed vocals of early Veruca Salt before the EP signs off on 'Machinery', possibly the most accessible and radio friendly track here with soaring vocals and relentless energy. This is a collection that is ready to take you into the summer but its a summer of doing whatever you want, prioritising pleasure and living for the moment so if that's what you're down for then you're in for a treat.
