I nearly bypassed this track from
Bulgarian artist Victoria as I thought it might be an Adele-esque plod but
there is much, much more at play here. ‘Pity Party’ is awash with layers of
sorrowful vocals and a sparse melody but Victoria’s lead vocal steps into the
single spotlight when the chorus drops and she finally steps out of the
shadows. This is a song about finding your strength again rather than letting
self-pity swallow you up but by the time we reach the glorious crescendo this could
be a Bond theme being performed with an orchestra in Vegas while a proud Sia
looks on from the wings.
