Larkin Poe - Bloom (Tricki-Woo)
Release Date: Out Now
'Bloom' is the latest album from sisterly duo Larkin Poe and I, for one, have been very excited to hear it. We get down to business straight away on 'Mocking Bird' that has a country rock'n'roll twang that is part Ben Harper, part early Aerosmith and part Indigo Girls but a whole lot of Larking Poe as the drums thud, the guitars send a wave of noise out into the world and the vocals call you to your certain death upon the rocks. 'Easy Love Part 1' is more of a road trippin' vibe but those gnarly guitars and country twang give this one a Cheryl Crowe sound that I am absolutely here for. The opening trio is completed by 'Little Bit' which slithers and slides all over the guitar to create a campfire anthem for those that want a simple but happy life and there's nothing wrong with that.
The engine throb of guitars and organ that gets 'Bluephoria' humming is near orgasmic and reminds me of Ferris & Sylvester at their most ballsy while 'Easy Love Part 2' lays down your weary head and strokes your head to ease the day away - it's a roller-coaster of emotions. The good times and energy are back on 'Nowhere Fast' with lines like "Just enough gas to get into trouble" paired perfectly with the guitars that make you want to strap on a pair of cowboy boots and head into town.
'If God Is A Woman' is my stand out track on the album, partially for the sentiment ("if God is a woman then the Devil is too" is a great line) but the swamp-stomp of this one is just an irresistible force so you'd better not stand in the way. Similarly, 'Pearls' comes flying in with a behemoth of a riff'n'beat combo all wrapped up in the black velvet of a sexy keys sound before the breathless vocals tell you how it is, how it was and how it's gonna be. 'Fool Outta Me' is straight up country rock'n'roll but it's all the better for it as the sisters warm to their escapism and sing "let the big wheels turn" with an authenticity you just can't fake or buy online.
Penultimate track, 'You Are The River', lets the country spirit and stunning vocal harmonies really shine through before the album closes out with 'Bloom Again' which leans heavily on that steel guitar and sweet, sweet vocals to set the tone for a beautiful song to end a superb album (there's a sting in the tail though, so watch out for that). Larkin Poe have, yet again, excelled in creating a collection of songs full of passion, heart and soul but delivered with pitch perfect musicianship and the kind of power that would comfortably fill a stadium. Luckily for you, they're playing more intimate on their upcoming tour so get out there and see them.
