SLOTFACE - ALBUM REVIEW

Slotface - Film Buff (Propeller Recordings)

Release Date: Out Now

I've grown to love the music that Slotface produces in the way that you learn to love unconventional art or a dog with a misaligned jaw and that, my friends, is a deep kind of love. 'Film Buff' is the new album and it opens with catchy recent single 'I Used To Be A Real Piece Of Shit' which is pop, punk, rock, indie and alt all wrapped up in a sticky ball of bubblegum and self-reflection. 'Leading Man' gets going with a throbbing bass line and pounding drums before Haley Shea's vocal (for she is Slotface) joins in with breathless and excited energy - pitched somewhere between Lauran Hibberd and Charly Bliss.

On 'Final Gorl' the energy drops down a little but that alt-pop vibe is still there with more than a hint of UPSAHL before 'Ladies Of The Fight' straps on a distorted guitar and goes full Biffy Clyro on our collective asses with face melting riffs and rapidly spat out lyrics. 'Lift Heavy' is LCD Soundsystem meets Soulwax on a night train through Europe while 'I Confess, I Guess' has a Weezer-esque feel to it but with whispered vocals that could be Alanis at her most vulnerable.

After another round of Redbulls, the energy spikes again on 'Charlie Calls' as the drums plough determinedly on, daring the guitars to try and keep up . Conversely, 'Tired Old Dog' has a kind of alt-country vibe like First Aid Kit recording a Kings of Leon track before 'The Great Escape' heads back to the West Coast for a thumping slacker-skate beast that demands a house party video to make it really feel like the 90s again. The closing pair of songs are the furiously intense 'Quiet On Set' which is L7 meets Sleater Kinney with Veruca Salt watching on followed by 'Impression Of A Car Crash', a song that does the quiet-loud-quiet thing with aplomb. This is, to say the least, an eclectic album full of brilliant influences and energetically breathless performances that suggest this was recorded in one take which gives the whole record such a fresh and urgent energy. Strong contender for album of the year based on the energy alone but Slotface has the songs to back it up and that is why I love this music.
