Canadian rising star IILLAA is an out and out pop artist but don’t let that put you off. ‘Boyfriend’ is a modern take on unrequited love (“I wish that your boyfriend would stare at me like I was the only girl who mattered in the world”) with powerful pop vocals singing out across the top of a simple but effective melody that creates a sound for fans of UPSAHL, Avril Lavigne, Lauran Hibberd or Emma Blackery. This is a short but bitter-sweet track that deals with an emotion we’ve all felt at some stage in our lives but that doesn’t make it any less punchy or effective in delivery of that message.
