ANGELICA GARCIA - ALBUM REVIEW

Angelica Garcia - Gemelo (Partisan
Recordings)

Release Date: Out Now

OK, OK so I'm a tad late getting this review up and for that I apologise but this is very much a case of better late than never so I'm not sorry but, also, not sorry - as the kids say. Angelica Garcia is making a real name for herself with a series of live shows either side of the Atlantic and now with this, her debut album, that name is getting bigger and bigger. 'Gemelo' opens with 'Reflexiones' that floats and swoons with the kind of uncertain energy that you might expect from Kate Bush, Seaker or Florence Welch - it's the perfect warm up for the album. Former single 'Color de Dolor' picks up a more energetic beat but still employs the lush layers of Garcia's vocals to carry the hypnotic melody while another single, 'Juanita', is a slowly but purposefully swaggering number that entrances the listener throughout.

On 'Angel [eterna]' Garcia is a delicate and gentle track with a softly pulsating beat that could soothe even the most savage of beasts before 'Mirame' picks up the pace a little with a Goldfrapp-esque sound that is perfect BBC 6Music fodder. Garcia's voice turns from soft and demure to steely and cool at the flick of a wrist which makes for a superb listen and that is never more evident than on 'Y Grito' which is urban, rhythmic and direct with thundering drums, bass and relentless energy. 'El Que' throbs into life with a seductive energy before erupting in to something altogether more lustful and, well, horny. 'Intuicion' has a lo-fi LadyHawke vibe but with looped vocals that will leave your head spinning while 'Gemini', my favourite track on the album, has a hint of a Madchester vibe in the loose beats and psyched-out, trippy vocals. The album finishes up on 'Paloma', a song full of rhythms that go straight to your hips and miss with your mind in the best way possible. Armed with this album, Garcia is sure to put on a great live show with twists and turns all along the way so get out there and fall in love with her, her music and something uniquely brilliant.
