BIG HUG - EP REVIEW

Big Hug - A Living You'll Never Know

Release Date: Out Now

This EP is described by the band as "persevering through shitty late stage Britain" and I don't think I've ever been more on board. London trio Big Hug kick off the 'A Living You'll Never Know' EP with the dreamy but slightly unnerving instrumental tune 'Pyrrhic Opposites' that feels like waking up on the first morning after the apocalypse and, for a few beautiful moments, forgetting that you have to get up and survive. 'Cruellemonde De La Hi Fi' (great title) kicks the energy up with a 21st century take on the abrasive alt-rock of Cable and At The Drive-In.

On 'Nothing Changes', the trio blend vocal harmonies with a tune so angular that is sounds like one of those Youtube videos of a guitarist and drummer trying to soundtrack a karate competition in real time. The EP is brought to a close with 'Gary On Earth' which has a bit of Biffy Clyro and Reuben about it but also the uplifting quality of early Hundred Reasons tracks. There's anger and angularity to this EP but what else did you expect from a band chronicling the shit show that is Britain in 2024? This is no place for Black Lace.
