This latest single from Fatoumata Diawara in collaboration with the Brooklyn Youth Choir is being released to bring attention to the issue of Female Genital Mutilation - something that has been experienced by over 200 million women in Africa and Asia. Considering the abhorrent subject matter, 'Sete' is actually a delightfully gentle and warm song with soothing vocal tones provided by the choir, laid delicately across the simple beat and sparse instrumentation. For her part, Diawara sings not with anger or rage but reason and humility which speaks volumes for her courage as does the strikingly powerful video.
