It is almost (almost) annoying when an artist who has been around for a little while finds their way to me and they are absolutely outstanding - I mean, where have you been hiding all this time? Tianna Esperanza is one such artist who I immediately want to discover more about based solely the excellence of her new single, 'Deadbeat Daddy'. Out just in time for Father's Day in the UK. this track gets going with a smoky 1920s vibe of a shuffled beat and sparse melody creating the perfect space for Esperanza's unique and brilliant vocal to sprawl out seductively. There are hints of Nina Simone and Eartha Kitt, sure, but in 2023 I don't know of anyone else performing this kind of raw, urgent and sexually charged jazz-blues fusion with such vivacious appetite for the music and its performance. Definitely a new favourite artist for me and, hopefully, for you too.
