SNAKE EYES - EP REVIEW

Snake Eyes - Health (Alcopop! Records)

Release Date: 16th June 2023

I feel like the pendulum has swung too far on the whole healthy living thing and it has now become a full time job just to keep your body in tip-top condition if you're in to that kind of thing. There is so much information, so many products and so much conflicting advice that it's easy to give up and just eat a family sized back of peanut M&Ms, convincing yourself it's a good source of protein. Anyway, ranting aside, Brighton trio Snake Eyes are about to drop their new EP 'Health' (hence the rant) and I'm pretty sure it's good for whatever ails you so let's strap it on and call the doctor in the morning, shall we?

Recent single 'No One Is Truly Cool' gets us underway with an unrelenting road trip energy as the droning guitars and powerhouse drums evoke a Young Knives vibe which I am very much a fan of. 'Crybaby' has a quirky Britpop energy in the vein of bands like Bennett or early Blur before 'Medicine' takes a more grunge pop direction bringing bands like Dinosaur Pile-Up and Weezer to mind as the guitars and bass do battle fiercely.

Before you know it we've reached the penultimate track of this rollercoaster ride as 'Medicine' romps in to view with a manic but ultimately lovable energy. 'Nothing Better' brings events to an end brilliantly as the lurching guitars and vocals do battle while the drums take a break. There's such a vital and honest energy around Snake Eyes that it's hard to resist their charms so my advice is to not bother trying - that's not health advice though, I would never dish that out.
