AISHA BADRU - EP REVIEW

Aisha Badru - Learning To Love Again
(Nettwerk)

Release Date: Out Now

Well here are five tracks of absolute beauty that you need to spend a little time with if you know what's good for you. Aisha Badru is a Nigerian-American singer-songwriter who brings something of herself to every track she writes which is, I suspect, what makes this such an utterly wonderful collection of songs. 'Learning To Love Again' opens with 'Lazy River' and a hauntingly beautiful melody that meanders along with a suitably lazy energy before introducing Badru's sumptuously soft pillow of a vocal. 'Moving On' adopts a more jazzy melody on the guitar and a Corinne Bailey Rae sound to her voice before 'Inside' moves the melody to the entirely fitting soft piano notes with a song that encapsulates the first moments of daybreak on a brand new day.

On 'Path Of Least Resistance' there's a Motown energy to the slow-dance sway of the drums and the slinky bass line and if you're not tempted to sashay around the kitchen with your loved one to this one then you may well need a new loved one. Or new ears. The final track, 'Move', takes things in an interesting and different direction with a pulsating beat underpinning the soft, soulful vocals and ambient melodies. Five tracks with different personalities but a common thread of quality and raw soul which makes it an absolute delight.
