Canadian gents Union Duke did an
excellent job of putting a spring in my step with their new single ‘123’ and it’s
only fair I share the joy with you. A sense of impending fun and a mischievously
plucked banjo grab your attention immediately before the subdued vocals join in
and wrap an arm around you like your best mate cheering you up when you’re in a
funk. By the time the chorus drops you’re left in no doubt that what we’re listening
to the version of Mumford & Sons that they could have been if they hadn’t been
so miserably self-obsessed. Rollocking beats, frantic string work and the group-sing
of five guys having fun all add up to a great time but when you add in lyrics that
suggest “Let’s kill all the Kardashians” then we’re looking straight down the
barrel of a great song all round.
