The evolution of Tina Boonstra as
an artist has reached a new stage with new single ‘Second Chance’ and this one
has legs. A brooding, sparse and spacious guitar riff emerges from the shadows
accompanied only by Boonstra’s vocal. The space slowly starts to fill up with
more sounds, percussion and a growing strength in that superb voice until we found
ourselves in front of an artist with the integrity and passion befitting the
likes of Anna Calvi, Ani DiFranco and Florence Welch. The multi-layered and sumptuous
crescendo to this song is completely at odds with the meak and timid opening
and that’s where the genius lies in the emergence of a plea throughout the song
that ends in triumph and relief in equal measure.
