SWIM DEEP – SINGLE REVIEW

Swim Deep – To Feel Good (Cooking Vinyl)
Swim Deep - To Feel Good

Release Date: Out Now

Yes! Yes! YES! Swim Deep are back and I am stupidly excited, largely because I thought they had split up or disappeared in to the musical abyss. Anyway, there’s an album and a tour on the horizon but for now we can sate our appetites with sumptuous new single ‘To Feel Good’. Opening with a sample of the choir singing Rozalla’s ‘Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good)’ from Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet, the Birmingham outfit then segue smoothly in to a baggy inspired beat and some light melodies. The opening line is typically brilliant, “I woke up this morning and the birds are singing their song and somehow even they sound skint and bored” delivered in deadpan, almost monotone vocal which is completely at odds with the uplifting choir. Think of the Streets working with the Verve and the Charlatans as the stream of consciousness documenting the bleakness of day-to-day life continues accompanied by the quietly brutal video (one of the best of the year so far). This is art, a thing of beauty and entirely justifies my giddiness at Swim Deep returning to our world. Welcome back gents, I missed you.
