Dream-pop is one of those genres
that’s hard to pin down so when Londoner Circe presented under this label I was
slightly wary. However, her new single ‘Barely Breathing’ has a bit more bight
than your average Dream-pop tune which is a relief! A laidback and luxurious
melody swoons and swoops while Circe’s vocal comes out with a Lana Del Rey
meets Shirley Manson vibe – part airy, part clenched teeth. There’s a real
sense of grandiosity to this with plucked strings and sweeping soundscapes and
that’s a lushness you don’t get in new tunes much these days so I’m very much
converted to this subgenre of Dream-pop, whatever label you want to put on it.
