One of the bands on a lot of lips
this year is Liverpool outfit SPQR but I had not had the pleasure…. until now.
New single ‘Slowly’ rattles along with a menacing and almost macabre energy driven
by the bassline and punchy percussion matched by a lurking guitar line. There
are elements of Television, Maximo Park, Young Knives and that kind of
tightness that tends to come with a trio of musicians all pouring their
creative juices in to a collective vat for boiling up. The choice of a monochrome
and darkly disturbing shadow puppet video is not only inspired but also sets a
high mark for video of the year at an early stage. Hype justified, then.
