On the surface of things, new
single ‘Bad Idea’ from New Zealand’s Theia seems like a catchy, moody alt-pop
song in the vein of Lordes and Sia which is all well and good. But if you
listen beyond the crunchy beats, bubbling melodies and dirty synth bass, there’s
something much deeper at play. ‘Bad Idea’ is an internal monologue of someone
struggling with the battle that goes on in the mind when confidence is knocked
or undermined and the only way to release the pain is through self-harm. It’s
not your common pop fodder and not a subject to be taken at all lightly but
Theia does an excellent job of balancing the seriousness of the situation with
a melody that isn’t morose or downbeat in any way.
