Sam Calver comes from Hastings and is bringing his brand of
smooth alt-soul to the table, if you’re interested. ‘Addicted’ is slickly
produced and puts Calver’s voice front and centre which is where it deserves to
be with it’s universal pop appeal, soulful smoothness and power, even in the
low ends. The sparse melody is hung around piano chords and a few guitar notes
sprinkled in the background and this could feel like a Craig David ballad or a Maroon
5 heartbreaker if it wasn’t for that voice which is just like hot whisky and
lemon – it packs a punch but it soothes and comforts at the same time and that’s
not an easy combination to pull off.
