THE VELVET HANDS – SINGLE REVIEW

The Velvet Hands – Only Blame Myself (ZEN10/Easy Action)
The Velvet Hands - Only Blame Myself

Release Date: 26th January 2018

They may have been bubbling under the surface for a while now but St Austell boys have been building things their own way and it looks like their patience is going to pay off in 2018. A UK tour and the patronage of taste makers This Feeling is a good start, if only they had a song to hang it all on. Oh wait, what have we here? ‘Only Blame Myself’ is the latest single from the Cornish lads and it’s a bit of bone rattler from the get go. The garage guitars and drums are raw as raw can be in the vein of early Libertines, the much-missed Stages of Dan, early Strokes and the Stooges but with an unmistakably British edge. The gang vocals and unrelenting pace of this track make you want to just strap on your DMs and have a pogo but it’s the snaking bassline that holds this one together and stops it falling in to disarray. Two and a half minutes of rock’n’roll riotousness that will shake you from your January blues so get out to the nearest gig on the tour if you know what’s good for you.
