DAVID BRENT & FORGONE CONCLUSION – SINGLE REVIEW
David Brent & Forgone Conclusion - Lady Gypsy

David Brent & Forgone Conclusion – Lady Gypsy

Release Date: Out Now

Comedy and music should go together so well and sometimes they do (Flight of the Conchords, Tenacious D, Matt Berry) but so often it’s cringe worthy and awful. So, when this first single from the ultimate cringe master general David Brent arrived in my inbox I was excited and dubious all at once. Thankfully, ‘Lady Gypsy’ walks that fine line between comedy and music brilliantly as Brent (Gervais, of course) channels David Essex trying to perform a Mumford & Sons song about dogging with a gypsy near Didcot. Gentle acoustic note ripple while a soggy gypsy lady emerges from the water to bed Brent atop some expensive heather. A melodious exchange between Brent and the gypsy lady about the clarity of their bargain (“yes the sex is free, the heather’s a pound”) is perfectly pitched and the work of ex-Razorlight man Andy Burrows can be heard in the background as some excellent songwriting and tunesmithery is in evidence (although Gervais must surely take some credit here too). A film follows in August as well as some live dates but not too many, that’s the key – keep them wanting more.

Live Dates:

8th September – Hammersmith Apollo, London
9th September – Hammersmith Apollo, London
