It's not often that the words 'X
Factor Finalist' pique my interest but Dublin born Roberta Howett was a
finalist in the first series of the X Factor with Sharon Osborne as her mentor
and since then she has been hard at work trying to build a career of her own so
it's worth giving her a listen. Latest single 'Water To Fire' is a strange fish
of a song in that I can't work out what era it belongs to. On the one hand this
is an 80s pop ballad with cheap sounding synths and some dramatic vocals.
However, on the other hand, this is the kind of direction that the likes of
Ellie Goulding and Taylor Swift are going in and it could easily appeal to that market of hairbrush singers the world over.
Howett undoubtedly has a strong voice but I'm not sure this is necessarily the
most effective vehicle for it so here's hoping for something a little more
passionate and raw to come in the future.
