JOE BOYD - SINGLE REVIEW

Joe Boyd - Driver (Agony & Ecstasy Records)
Joe Boyd - Driver

Release Date: Out Now

Now, London based artist Joe Boyd has an intriguing list of influences on his Facebook page. I defy anyone to ignore an artist creating music influenced by the likes of Black Flag, Miles Davis, The Beach Boys, Chet Baker and Jimi Hendrix. So latest single 'Driver' has a lot to live up to and immediately see those influences seeping out of the music. Edgy, pent-up guitars build the tension before the Jazzy drums roll in and Boyd's smooth, West Coast inspired vocal swoons in to keep things from boiling over....just. One influence not mentioned is that of Incubus and their namesake singer Brandon Boyd which is where my mind and ears go when I hear this track. The accompanying video makes for slightly uncomfortable viewing like the most awkward video dating profile tape ever but by the time this song reaches its climax you are already lost in the bluesy, jazzy, edgy rock'n'roll with soul that Joe Boyd presents. Just goes to show that taking the right ingredients can often come up with a delightful dish.
