When the video for this single by
West London soloist Only Real (Niall to his mum) began I felt an overwhelming
urge to punch the singer for being such a Damon Albarn wannabe. Then I
remembered that I'm an adult and that there are myriad worse people to want to
be than Damon Albarn. On second listen, 'Can't Get Happy' is actually more like
Jamie T guesting with Gorillaz which is something that should happen if it
hasn't already. A trippy, 90s inspired guitar hook and some chilled beats
provide the bed for Only Real to lay out his spoken word meets rap stylings
before that chorus comes back around again. The big bonus with this single is
that the video is one of the best I have seen in years as time spent watching
Ren and Stimpy mixed with an old copy of Yellow Submarine has obviously seeped
in to the subconscious of Only Real to allow this masterpiece to come floating
out. No white background and high bar stool for him. Hells no.
